Hans-Lietzmann-Lecture 22.11.2013: Averil Cameron (Oxford) "Christian literature and Christian history"
Christian literature and Christian history
Hans Lietzmann’s classic work, Geschichte der alten Kirche, broadened the chronological range adopted by the GCS series to include the fourth and fifth centuries AD. The last two decades have seen the emergence of new ways of approaching early Christian writing and its relation to the history of Christianity in the Roman empire, while the popular conception of the ‘long late antiquity’ invites us to extend Lietzmann’s chronological range still further. This lecture will address the theme of early Christian writing in relation to these new approaches, including its status as literature and its relation to rhetoric and intellectual history. It will also ask what connection there is between Christian writing and the history of the Roman empire, as well as the development of Christianity within it.
