Origen - Works translated in German
Based on similar Italian and French undertakings, a bilingual edition of the entire works of Origen is to be released, edited by Alfons Fürst (Münster) and Christoph Markschies (Berlin) in a cooperation project between publishing houses Verlage Herder and De Gruyter. The edition makes use of critical texts from the Berlin Academy project “The Greek Christian Writers” as well as new texts still to come. Newer critical editions outside of the GCS as well as German translations with brief commentaries and an extensive introduction are also to be added. Surprisingly, German translations (or even translations in other modern languages) are still not available for many of Origen’s texts. In this way, one of the presumably most influential Early Christian theologians after Paul (besides Augustine) will be brought back into contemporary discussions and his works made available to those who have difficulties with the certainly complex way in which Origen formulates Greek in the originals and who are not really helped much by the simplified Latin translations from late antiquity (above all from Hieronymus und Rufin). The editorial support for the edition is being provided by the Origen Research Centre of the Catholic Theological Faculty of the Westphalian Wilhelm University of Münster, whose other activities certainly deserve attention.
