ENTFÄLLT: Workshop “(Im)material Evidence: Reassessing the Archaeology of Early Christian Monasticism.”

Am 16. Juli um 18 Uhr wird der Lehrstuhl für Antikes Christentum einen Workshop mit Prof. Stephen Davis in R. 113 der Theologischen Fakultät anbieten. Davis, der neben anderen Tätigkeiten auch Direktor des Yale Monastic Archaeology Project ist, wird zum Thema „Archaeological Sources for the Study of Early Christian Monasticism” reden (http://www.yale.edu/egyptology/ae.htm).

“(Im)material Evidence: Reassessing the Archaeology of Early Christian Monasticism.” The workshop will be based on research for Prof. Davis article/chapter entitled, “Sources for the Study of Early Monasticism: The Archaeological Evidence”, which will appear in the forthcoming Oxford Handbook of Christian Monasticism, edited by Bernice Kaczynski. In that article, Davis offers a critique of the kinds of archaeological and historical interpretations that serve as a basis for the identification and dating of ancient and medieval Christian monastic sites. In reassessing the methodologies commonly applied to monastic material evidence, he concludes that the evidence in fact turns out to be not so material after all.
